Masterpiece Fine Art, Dubai is proud to present its latest exhibition of photographs by legendary British photojournalist, George Rodger. The exhibition showcases a series of authentic images from Middle Eastern history, and will be on display from the 22nd of August onwards at Masterpiece Fine Art, Dubai Gallery Two in Wafi City.
A renowned war journalist of his time, George Rodger travelled across continents and documented life in several warstricken countries including Iran, Burma, North Africa, Italy and many more. Rodger started his career as a photographer at the BBC before working with the renowned magazine LIFE based in America, where he travelled to 62 countries
covering over 18 war campaigns over seven years. In 1947 he joined his peers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David (Chim) Seymour in establishing the renowned photographic agency Magnum Photos. Some of his most notable photographs include the London Blitz, West Africa with the Free French, the Fall of Burma, the Sicilian and Salerno landings, the Battle of Monte Cassino, the D-Day Normandy landings, the Liberation of Paris, Brussels Holland and Denmark, the Surrender at Luneberg and the Liberation of Belsen Concentration Camp.
George Rodger described himself as a dreamer and his adventures would often take him into remote and challenging environments including deserts, jungles, war, and many other unseen parts of the world. Portraying stories through images, George would often play with his composition or the light but never interfere with the subject. He would let the subject of his images naturally draw focus and visually tell a story to the viewer.
His work in the Middle East covers narratives such as the life of Bedouin soldiers riding upon their camels, a soldier holding his tame hawk used for hunting birds, rays of light streaming through the ancient souqs of Baghdad, the grandeur of the Pyramids at Giza and royals like His Hashemite Highness Emir Adbullah ibn Hussein of Jordan, who later became the king of Jordan to name a few. The exhibition at Masterpiece Fine Art, Dubai is an historical homage to the insights of life in the region, and will undoubtedly capture the attention of local historians, photographers and cultural enthusiasts seeking a glimpse into the past, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic photojournalists.
